Food Delivery Cannot Find Your New-Build

Delivery apps use map data for both address entry and driver routing, so a missing home fails twice. Here is how to work round it and fix it.

Takeaway apps fail in two separate ways for new-build owners: they refuse to accept the address at all, or they accept it and send the rider somewhere else. The second is more annoying, because you pay for it.

TL;DR

  • Delivery apps use map provider data for address entry and for rider routing.
  • “Outside delivery area” often means the app has placed you somewhere you are not.
  • Set the address by dragging the map pin, then save it and check it before each order.
  • Delivery notes are read by riders far more often than people assume - use them.
  • Correcting the map entry fixes both failures at once.

Two failures, one cause

When the app will not accept your address, it is because its address search - drawing on map provider data - has nothing at your location.

When the app accepts the address but the rider ends up two streets away, the address exists in the data but is positioned wrongly, or the road layout the rider is being routed along is out of date.

Both trace back to the same thing: map data that has not caught up with a development that is already occupied.

“Outside our delivery area”

This one catches people out because it looks like a coverage decision. Often it is not. If the app has placed your address at the wrong point - a site entrance, a postcode centroid, the middle of a field - it measures the delivery radius from that wrong point, and you fall outside a zone you are actually well inside.

Test it by dragging the pin to your real front door and seeing whether the restaurant list changes. If it does, the problem is the address position, not the coverage.

Practical steps

Set the address by map pin, not by search. Zoom to maximum and place it on your front door. Save it and give it a clear name.

Re-check the saved address occasionally. Apps sometimes re-resolve saved addresses against updated data and quietly move them.

Write delivery notes that are actually useful. Not “new build, hard to find” - instead: “Enter estate from Foundry Lane, second left, fourth house on right, cream door. Ring bell.” Riders read these.

Add a what3words reference as a second line in the notes. It costs nothing and some riders will use it.

Order to a workplace or a friend for anything time-sensitive until the address settles. It is a workaround rather than a fix, but it stops you paying for food that arrives cold on someone else’s doorstep.

Do not blame the restaurant. A failed delivery on a new-build address is almost never the kitchen’s doing, and the refund route sits with the platform rather than with them.

Why this outlasts the other problems

Postal data, broadband records and bank checks all settle within months, because they follow defined administrative processes. Map data is different. It has no deadline, no application form you can submit and no obligation to update, so a home can stay missing or mispinned long after every other system has accepted it.

That is the gap AddressClerk exists to close. We diagnose whether the case is a missing address, a misplaced pin or a missing road, prepare the appropriate correction, submit it through Google’s process and follow it up until the legitimate address is recognised. Google decides on acceptance and timing, which is why we never quote a date.

Common questions

Why does it say I am outside the delivery area?

Often because the app has placed your address at the wrong point and is measuring the delivery radius from there. Drag the pin to your actual front door and see whether the restaurant list changes - if it does, the coverage was never the problem.

My saved address stopped working. Why?

Apps periodically re-resolve saved addresses against updated map data, and a saved pin can be quietly moved in the process. It is worth re-checking the pin position after any long gap between orders.

Who should I contact about a failed delivery?

The platform rather than the restaurant. A rider who cannot find a new-build address is almost never the kitchen’s doing, and the platform is the only party that can both refund you and flag the address.

AddressClerk is an independent service and is not affiliated with Google. Google ultimately controls whether and when map corrections are accepted.
